Arts, Social Sciences & Communication Careers
Most communication, policy and people-facing careers in Hong Kong have no statutory gate. What converts a degree into a job is proof of craft: published work, campaigns, research projects, languages.
Typical careers
- Journalist and content strategist
- Public relations and corporate communications
- Policy and NGO programme officer
- Translator / linguist
- Market and social researcher
- Curatorial and cultural administration
- Civil service executive officer
Professional certification ladders
No statutory license for most roles — professional standing is built through portfolios, language credentials (an IELTS/TOEFL score remains useful evidence) and, for translating, recognised language qualifications. Education and social-work pivots DO have gates (see the education page; social workers register with the Social Workers Registration Board after a recognised degree).
Level of study
Bachelor's: QF Level 5. Taught master's (communication, public policy, translation): QF Level 6 — a common upskill one to three years into work.
If this path doesn't fit
Communications programmes concentrate at CUHK and HKBU, with strong self-financing options at Shue Yan and Chu Hai. A second-chance route many take: degree now, funded master's later. Overseas, humanities degrees work the same way — see destinations.
