Education Careers

Every teacher in a Hong Kong school is registered with the Education Bureau — registration plus the right subject preparation is what turns a degree into a classroom.

Typical careers

Professional certification ladders

Teachers in schools must be registered with the EDB as a permitted or qualified teacher (檢定教員/准用教員). The classic route is a bachelor's degree plus a PGDE (or a concurrent BEd); EdUHK is the specialist university, and concurrent education degrees also run at HKU and HKBU. Early childhood educators need a recognised ECE qualification — Yew Chung College specialises exactly there.

Level of study

BEd and other bachelor's degrees: QF Level 5; PGDE and MEd: QF Level 6.

If this path doesn't fit

Missed a funded education place? A degree in your subject plus PGDE later reaches the same classroom. Self-financing education-adjacent programmes and the sub-degree-to-degree ladder are real alternatives; so is teaching abroad — see destinations.
