Nursing & Health Careers
Health professions are Hong Kong's most clearly gated careers: statutory registration decides who may practise, and only recognised qualifications open the register. That makes programme choice at application time a career decision.
Typical careers
- Registered nurse (RN) — hospitals, clinics, community care
- Physiotherapist
- Radiographer
- Occupational therapist
- Medical laboratory technologist
- Health administration and public health roles
Professional certification ladders
Nursing: registration with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong is mandatory; a recognized nursing degree (or pre-registration diploma route) is the gate — recognised programmes run at HKU, CUHK, PolyU and in the self-financing sector (HKMU, Tung Wah College, Saint Francis). Allied health: physiotherapists, radiographers, occupational therapists and medical laboratory technologists register through their boards under the Supplementary Medical Professions Council, each accepting defined recognised qualifications.
Level of study
Pre-registration nursing and allied-health bachelor's degrees are QF Level 5. Some advanced/practitioner routes build to master's level (QF 6).
If this path doesn't fit
Funded nursing places are among the most competitive in the city: the self-financing nursing programmes at HKMU, Tung Wah and Saint Francis — several SSSDP-subsidised — materially widen the gate. Health-adjacent pivots include testing and certification, health information and sports science.
