Performing & Creative Arts Careers
Performing careers run on auditions, reels and reps, not licenses. Hong Kong's pipeline is unusually clear: the Academy for Performing Arts trains alongside the profession itself, and the creative-media programmes at CityU and HKBU feed the commercial side.
Typical careers
- Stage and screen performer (dance, drama, music)
- Film/TV production and post-production
- Composer, sound design
- Stage and event management
- Arts administration
- Creative media and game art
Professional certification ladders
No statutory registration exists for performing artists — your training pedigree, portfolio and audition record are the credential. Adjacent technical and production roles similarly hire on showreels. Teaching your art privately or in schools may touch education-sector requirements described in the education page.
Level of study
HKAPA degrees and university creative programmes are QF Level 5; an MFA or equivalent advanced practice degree is QF Level 6.
If this path doesn't fit
The honest pivot ladder: performing-arts training to creative-media production to arts administration — all inside the same sector. Self-financing design and media programmes (THEi among them) plus SSSDP subsidies widen access. Overseas conservatories are the classic alternative — see destinations.
