Study in Germany

Germany's public universities charge no tuition on most programmes (only a semester contribution) — the value pick of the West, with a catch: admission hurdles for school leavers and, on many programmes, German.

How admission works

Many international applications route through uni-assist; some universities take them directly. The key caveat for HKDSE holders: German universities usually require either a foundation year (Studienkolleg) plus its assessment test, or one to two years of successful university study, before direct bachelor entry — verify your exact route via DAAD and anabin. English-taught bachelor's exist but are a minority; German-taught programmes need DSH/TestDaF.

Qualification structure

Bachelor's degrees run three years (some four), master's two; the credit-based system spans research universities and universities of applied sciences.

Visa and post-study

A student visa needs admission plus a blocked account (Sperrkonto) showing the living-cost minimum set each year. Graduates can stay up to 18 months to seek qualified employment — per current rules.
