Non-JUPAS Applications: How Direct Admission to HK Universities Works
Key takeaways
- Non-JUPAS (direct) applications are for anyone not applying mainly on HKDSE results — international qualification holders, sub-degree students seeking senior-year entry, and mature applicants.
- Each university runs its own non-JUPAS portal with its own deadlines; there is no central system.
- Applications usually open from September onwards, earlier than most JUPAS deadlines.
- Senior-year entry lets qualified associate degree and higher diploma holders enter year 3 of many bachelor's programmes.
Not everyone enters a Hong Kong university through JUPAS. If you hold an international qualification, are completing a sub-degree programme, or are a mature applicant, you will apply directly to each university through what the sector calls non-JUPAS admission. The route is fully mainstream: universities reserve places for direct applicants every year.
Who applies through non-JUPAS
- Students with IB Diplomas, GCE A-Levels, or other international qualifications
- Sub-degree students (associate degree or higher diploma) seeking senior-year entry into the final two years of a bachelor's degree
- Mature applicants and those with other non-local qualifications
- Transfer students from other tertiary programmes, where credits are recognised
How the process differs from JUPAS
JUPAS is one central application; non-JUPAS is nine (or more) separate ones. Each university — and in some cases each faculty — runs its own online portal, sets its own deadlines and requires its own documents. Most non-JUPAS schemes open around September to November and make offers on a rolling basis, so applying early genuinely helps.
Because offers are not tied to a single HKDSE results day, timing is strategic: strong predicted grades and a complete application early in the cycle can produce an early offer.
Building a strong application
A typical non-JUPAS application includes your academic transcripts and predicted grades, proof of English proficiency where required, a personal statement, and reference letters; performing-arts, design and architecture programmes often add portfolios, auditions or interviews. Sub-degree applicants for senior-year entry should highlight their CGPA — competitive senior-year entry usually demands solid grades in a related discipline.
Tailor each application. Universities read thousands of generic personal statements; the ones that stand out explain why this programme, at this university, fits this applicant.
Where to apply
Every university profile in our universities directory links to the official undergraduate admissions pages, where the current non-JUPAS application portals live. Verify deadlines on those official pages — they shift slightly every year, and some faculties close earlier than the university-wide deadline.
